Kitesurfing Events 2020
With every year that passes, kitesurfing events get bigger and better, and 2019 was no exception. Now heading into 2020, we’re expecting the most exciting year yet as the sport becomes more popular and widespread. Be sure not to miss out on all the fun with our guide to some of the best kitesurfing events coming up in 2020.
Red Bull King of the Air 2020
Coming soon, so don’t miss out! The King of the Air contest will be held across the first half of February 2020 from 1st to 16th. The event, which is held at Kite Beach, Cape Town, promises action-packed big air riding from some of the world’s best-known riders, as well as lesser-known underdogs ready to smash their way onto the scene.
This year’s contest has had a format shake-up, with no gender preferences and a qualification round allowing more riders, both pro and amateur, a shot at competing in the final. Online video entry winners and wildcards will compete alongside last year’s finalists, which include F-One’s Liam Whaley, to be crowned champion in what is guaranteed to be a pure-adrenaline, extreme kiteboarding showcase of talent.
Kitesurfing Armada Festival 2020
Held at the UK’s kitesurf capital, Hayling Island on the south coast, the 2020 event for the famous Kitesurfing Armada Festival will be held between 19th and 21st June. The festival hosts a massive range of activities and caters to all ages and skill levels; there is even the opportunity to ride at the (usually members only) CBK Beach hot spot. You could even find yourself riding alongside kitesurfing royalty, with Nick Jacobsen, Tom Court, Gisela Pulido, Pete Cabrinha and many others on the list of past guests. The festival is also host to the British Kitesurfing Championships, which features pro categories, as well as junior, amateur and master ones, so there’s the opportunity to enter for yourself.
Out of the water, there are countless things to see and do with bars, eateries, exhibits and live music that lasts late into the night, so you’ll never be short of something to do! Take a look at our roundup of last year’s event to find out more on what to expect.
Cabarete Kite Festival 2020
A week-long festival that celebrates watersports and ocean awareness, the Cabarete Kite Festival will be held between 17th and 19th of July 2020. The location is the tropical paradise of Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, and the event organisers plan meticulously to ensure guests get the most out of the festival.
Visitors can enjoy activities, surf sessions, music and engaging talks from special guests that cover various categories from wellness to ocean conservation. There’s demo sessions as well as kite clinics and free ride slots so everyone can get involved. Evenings come alive with beach parties and festivities, and in the day, you have the opportunity to explore the stunning local area. Not forgetting kitesurfing, some of the world’s most prominent champions will be battling it out in a spectacle of epic riding and ultimate tricks!
Red Bull Megaloop
After a thrilling final in 2019, this event is expected to return again in 2020. The Red Bull Megaloop is an extreme kiteboarding event that challenges 16 of the most daring and skilled kiteboarders to perform megaloops, competing for scores judged on distance, height, style and performance. Thousands of spectators flock to the choppy coastline of Zandvoort in The Netherlands to watch riders push their limits in winds of over 40 knots.
Riders are on standby between 1st April to 1st November, waiting for organisers to decide the perfect date based on weather conditions. Once called up, riders brave the harsh conditions and sideways rain, scoring points and getting some big air. Previous competitors include Oswald Smith, Ross-Dillon Player and our very own Liam Whaley.
